The castle in Hautefort has existed since the 11th century. But what we can see today is the result of the castle’s reconstruction in the 17th century. It was then that gardens were laid out around the castle. But the gardens we admire today were created in 1853 by the landscape architect Count Choulot. He redesigned the old gardens, added geometric flowerbeds, gardens of clipped trees in fanciful shapes, and a “green” tunnel. In the park, you can see a magnolia and a Lebanese cedar.
The castle is featured in the film "The Story of Eternal Love".
Attention! The castle closes for lunch from 12 to 14. We arrived exactly at 12 and witnessed the castle gates being locked. We had to explore the surroundings for two hours :)
By the way, here is the castle’s official website with prices and other information.
