Day 9: January 27

Mirissa - Weligama

At 9 a.m. we went to Weligama to the beach to surf.

We rented one board right on the beach and took turns riding it. Apparently my trials and tribulations in Portugal were not in vain, because today I was doing pretty well riding in the foam. Once I even rode a small wave, but that was more luck than anything else.

Probably the waves here in Weligama are very suitable for beginners, because while I was in Portugal I couldn’t ride like I did today at all. In the foam I manage to stand up on the board and ride quite often. And in Portugal, over 4 days of lessons, I managed to stand up only a couple of times.

As always, I’m amazed by Volchy — how easily everything comes to him. He didn’t even have surf school (today was his second time on a board in his life; the first was several years ago in Bali), and he’s already riding better than me! I just sit there, watch him, and smile broadly when he speeds along on the board.

When we were completely exhausted (about 4 hours had passed) and the sun started beating down mercilessly, we went home. On the way, we bought kottu for lunch and ate it on our balcony.

We slept for two hours. We woke up, and still had no energy, but we had already decided to ride for a couple more hours in the evening. So we headed to Weligama again.

We rode until late. The sun had already set below the horizon, and it became so beautiful, with that golden, hazy light. The waves got stronger in the evening.

For dinner, we went back to the fish market, wanting to try shrimp. We ordered half a kilo of shrimp for $6.5.

The shrimp were very tasty. They prepare them in some kind of sauce with garlic and green onions. We were full!
