Day 6: January 24

Delawella Beach - Weligama - Mirissa

Sri Lanka, 2018

Itinerary

Today is not a very good day. We made it to Weligama, where we thought we’d stay for a couple of nights, but it turned out to be strange again. A noisy road, the beach right by the road. I guess I’m very spoiled. I don’t know what came over me again. Some kind of despair. I tell Volchy: everything here is so awful in Sri Lanka, take me back to the airport.

And yes, that happens to me too.

We drove past Weligama. Made it to Mirissa. It was a little better there than in Weligama, and the beach was better too (for swimming). In Mirissa we searched for a hotel for a long, long time. All the hotels were either very expensive or super scary.

In the end, we drove uphill, farther from the road and the ocean. While we were standing there looking at the map, a Sri Lankan woman came up to us and offered to show us a room. We agreed. The room was in an unfinished hotel where only one floor was ready. But we agreed because the room was pretty good, with a balcony and on a quiet little street. And we were also very tired of searching;

By the time we found the hotel, the day was already drawing to a close, so we didn’t even go swimming today. And in the evening it started to rain.
