Karlštejn
Castles · 5/4/2008 · Original language: Russian
Karlštejn is one of the most popular Czech castles.
Here you will encounter crowds of tourists, souvenir shops, and overpriced restaurant prices.
Karlštejn is easy to reach from Prague by train to the town of the same name. There are many hotels in the town, so if you wish, you can easily stay overnight. In 2008, the minimum hotel price was 35 euros for a double room.
The castle is named in honor of the King of Bohemia and Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV. The castle was founded in 1348.
The castle was built according to the principle of a stepped arrangement of buildings, where each subsequent structure is built higher than the previous one. At the very top is the Great Tower, with walls about 4 meters thick.
This is where Charles IV liked to spend time in the summer, and where he kept his treasures and regalia. The crown of the Holy Roman Empire was also kept here.
It is interesting that this very popular castle is not yet among the UNESCO-recognized World Heritage sites. Why? It is very simple. In 1887–1899, the castle was restored. The restoration was carried out by a professor from the University of Vienna together with his student. However, as some experts claim, Charles would never have recognized his castle after such a restoration...
